Been using speedtester for some time which prompted me to call my ISP (Virgin Media - nee NTL) because, since the middle of August, I've had poor download speeds being advised via speedtester.
I was on Virgins 4Mbps service until mid June and speed tester results very consistent with monthly average of approx 3.5Mbps download speed (measured from January 2008). From mid June was upgraded to 10Mbps and initially tester indicated speeds of up to 8mbps though inconsistent, as speeds ranges shown by tester were between 2 and 8 Mbps (+/-) - but would say predominately higher end thru' to mid/late July. From that time reverse happened and now predominately 2Mbps and 5 Mbps (+/-)
Virgin suggested downloading trial software from Microsoft which I did and download at 1 to 1.2 MBps (approx 8Mbps). The 427MB file was indicated to be downloaded in 5-6 minutes.
Subsequent manual tests using spee tester results in download speed of approx 2Mbps!
I performed further test using various other speed testers with the following (snapshot) results:
All were run one after the other. Speedtester upload speed notification is no different to any of the others but download speed notification is significantly different!?! I've tested throughout the day and download speed notification is always on low side to such an extent I've lost confidence in it providing accurate results. I've repeated this scenario daily with similar results
I run speedtester with all other programs closed and no other PC's running. Anybody else experiencing same problem or can offer explanation/advice????
I've repeated these tests with similar results. I've uninstalled, cleaned registry, downloaded and re-installed fresh copy but still same. No moderator comment as to reasons why such a discrepancy??
