My Electric meter failed last August (2007) I immediately notified NPower and after 3 failed appointments to fit a replacement I eventually got a new one in February 2008. My electric readings were estimated for just over 6 months and I complainted to NPower about the first two estimates because I had been out of the country for 2 months so had not used hardly any energy. They said they would rectifiy and allocated a complaint number. I wrote to them in September December January and March without any reply, even sent them copies of all previous correspondence but still no response. I paid a nominal £150 towards the bills but insisted they clear my complaint re incorrect estimate before finalising, but now they have sent me a letter saying they will send in the Debt Collector and/or take me to court if I do not pay. I have a record of all the letters written and dates phone calls were made..... I feel optimistic that if I have to go to court I would be in a good position, what would others do please.
If you have enough clear evidence that they were in the wrong then I say go to court. Why not trying complaining to ofcom or whichever organisation handles this first?
Had someminimal free legal advice which appears to be indicating I have some options, (a) refuse to pay the bill and if they take legal action enter a counter claim disputing the amount or (b) dispute the amount in small claims court before they take legal action against me. I am going to be out of the county again in a few weeks for over a year so I might just let things drift on, don't think court hearings are fixed that quickly then it might be quite a time before I could fix a firm date.
If they take their sweet time over this matter just claim plausible deniability as you sure as hell aren't going to alter any future plans. Let it drag on.
